Publications

The Somali Institute of Peace (SIP) firmly believes that the nexus between rigorous academic research and practical peacebuilding engagement is indispensable for sustainable conflict transformation. In pursuit of this belief, SIP launched in 2019 a quarterly peer-reviewed journal dedicated to conflict and peace studies, positioning it as a flagship scholarly platform addressing Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa’s peace and security challenges.

This journal serves multiple critical functions. It provides an academically credible forum for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to publish empirically grounded, theoretically informed, and policy-relevant studies that explore the root causes, manifestations, and resolutions of conflict. The journal’s interdisciplinary scope encompasses political science, sociology, anthropology, international relations, and peace and conflict studies, fostering holistic perspectives necessary for understanding Somalia’s complex socio-political landscape. Special emphasis is placed on Somali-specific dynamics such as clan systems, governance structures, regional influences, and cultural factors.

Through its regular publication cycle, the journal facilitates timely intellectual exchange and debate, enriching local and global knowledge ecosystems. It supports capacity building among Somali and regional scholars by providing opportunities for peer-reviewed dissemination and scholarly dialogue, thereby strengthening the academic community’s role in peacebuilding. Additionally, the journal contributes to bridging gaps between academia and policy by translating research findings into actionable recommendations, enhancing the relevance and impact of peace interventions.

SIP’s commitment to knowledge dissemination extends beyond the journal to include policy briefs, reports, and public education materials designed to reach diverse audiences—government officials, civil society, international partners, and local communities. These publications aim to raise awareness, shape informed discourse, and support evidence-based decision-making across sectors.

Overall, SIP’s publications embody its dual mission of advancing scholarly rigor and practical peacebuilding, reinforcing the vital role of knowledge production in fostering sustainable peace and development in one of the world’s most fragile contexts.
